I try to fill the entire canvas with all the elements I'm looking for, including light, shadow, shapes, focused, and defocused areas. For me, this creates visual interest as the eye scans the whole photograph for these interactions. I also love the idea that the audience for these photographs is not photographers. I just happen to use a camera to create these images. Perhaps one day I'll learn how to use the thing so I can get something in focus correctly, but where's the fun in that?
